Development Associate/Staff Attorney
Established in 1969, Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA) is the foremost resource for members of the arts community seeking information and representation on legal and business matters. VLA offers educational programs, access to pro bono legal representation and counseling, alternative dispute resolution services, and advocate for the arts community. Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts offers a chance to be involved in public interest, as well as arts and entertainment related work in New York City.
VLA seeks an attorney with development experience to fill the combined full-time position of Development Associate/Staff Attorney.
In the development/ institutional advancement aspect of the position, the individual will implement and manage an annual fundraising program. The Development Associate will develop and administer a comprehensive program to secure ongoing support from individuals, law firms, corporations and public sources to meet the needs of the organization and to assure the continuation and growth of
VLA. The person will: (1) work with the Executive Director, the Associate Director, the Board of Directors, marketing and education staff and volunteers to cultivate and broaden the New York City, regional and national donor constituencies; (2) will work closely with the Executive Director, the Associate Director, the Development Committee of the Board, and marketing staff to ensure the development program and related areas operate in an organized, united fashion and achieve desired results; (3) will also oversee the development and maintenance of necessary reports and records, monitor budget requirements and control expenditures; (4) will also be responsible for all aspects of VLA’s special events.
The second aspect of the position is to act as a Staff Attorney for VLA. This position offers a unique opportunity to represent and counsel low-income artists and nonprofit arts organizations on a wide range of issues, and to develop advocacy positions for the organization. This attorney will
also educate artists, nonprofit organizations, students and lawyers on arts, intellectual property and nonprofit legal issues, and assist in referring hundreds of pro bono cases to volunteer attorneys in the New York area.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will be an attorney licensed to practice in New York with 3-5+ years of legal and fundraising experience or the equivalent. For the legal expertise, VLA prefers experience and
expertise in contracts, intellectual property, licensing, and/or nonprofit organizations law, as well as supervisory and administrative skills. For the development aspect of the job, VLA prefers fundraising experience (foundations, corporations, law firms, events, etc.) in the New York area, with a
proven record of successful initiatives. Strong organizational, computer (database), writing and interpersonal skills are essential. Strong managerial and administrative skills are required, as are the confidence and
ability to work successfully and collegially with the directors, Board, staff and volunteers. While an arts background is not required, an informed interest in the arts and familiarity with sources that fund them is important, as are a belief in VLA’s mission and a willingness to make a long-term
commitment to the organization. Ability to relate to both artists and attorneys is necessary.
