Connections between the United States and Italy an

Connections between the United States and Italy and the roots of the New World’s fascination with the home of Renaissance run deep. As American cultural heritage professionals and lawyers encounter Italian cultural heritage, however, they also encounter Italy’s extensive body of cultural heritage regulation and the dilemmas it raises. How should an American audience of cultural heritage professionals and lawyers understand Italian cultural heritage regulation and the challenges it may bring? What is really within the purview of Italian cultural heritage law and how does that compare to cultural heritage as we define it in the United States?

In this webinar Dr. Felicia Caponigri and Dr. Anna Pirri Valentini, the co-directors of the academic research network Cultural Heritage Law Across the Atlantic, explain facets of Italian cultural heritage regulation comparatively for an American audience. The speakers will spotlight headline-grabbing cases, decoding specific articles of Italy’s complex statutory cultural heritage legal framework, and highlighting what is within and outside of the definition of cultural property in Italy. In the process, they will also highlight emerging rules for contemporary areas of Italian cultural heritage with which an American audience is increasingly interacting, including 20th century Italian art and fashion. Attendees will learn the building blocks of Italian cultural heritage law, while also leaving with key takeaways about the circulation of artworks from Italy to the United States, the difference between image rights in cultural properties and copyright, and what legal rules may be most relevant as Americans purchase 21st century Italian art and fashion.

An illustrator is accused of copying A.I.’s style?

There have been pushbacks to the growing popularity of A.I. generated art. As an effort of protecting the interest of actual artists, subreddit r/Art prohibits posting A.I. generated art on the forum.

On December 27, Ben Moran, a digital illustrator based in Vietnam, was thrilled to share his work A Muse in Warzone, which took the artist about a month to complete, on r/Art. But he was only to be stunned by a ban on the work imposed by the moderator, indicating the work violates the community’s no-A.I. policy. The mediator’s response to the artist’s contest is rather ironic: “If you really are a ‘serious’ artist, then you need to find a different style”.

Now it’s our turn to think: can a human artist really be accused of stealing from A.I. artists, given the latter is trained based on the former’s work?

The war in Ukraine is an explicit rejection of Ukr

The war in Ukraine is an explicit rejection of Ukrainian culture. For years, Putin has denied all evidence showing that the language, history, and heritage of Ukraine is distinctly separate. Rather, he has supported propaganda that reframes Ukrainian culture as an extension of Russian culture. The damage that has been done to Ukrainian cultural heritage sites is therefore not just a consequence of the war but a targeted attack on the Ukrainian identity.

Hundreds of cultural heritage sites have been destroyed or damaged since February 2022. The scale is unfathomable but a recent New York Times article helps put it into perspective. "A Culture in the Cross Hairs" was recently published featuring research, pictures, videos, and analysis of the current situation. Recognizing the power of visualization, the Center for Art Law believes this to be a valuable resource for highlighting the heartbreaking extent of damage to museums, churches, monuments, libraries, and more. Meet Dr. Gail Levin, our guest speaker for the upc

Meet Dr. Gail Levin, our guest speaker for the upcoming event "Setting the Record Straight: A Conversation with an Art Historian"!

Dr. Gail Levin is Distinguished Professor of art history, fine & performing arts, American studies, and women’s studies at Baruch College and the Graduate Center, of the City University of New York. The acknowledged authority on American realist painter Edward Hopper, she is author of books and articles on this artist, including the catalogue raisonné and Edward Hopper: An Intimate Biography.

Her work on twentieth century and contemporary art has won international acclaim, been widely published, and translated in America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Articles range from theory of artists’ biographies to explorations of the intersection of American and Asian cultural studies. She has also written on the art of women artists in diverse historical contexts. Her frequent focus on women artists and Jewish artists, led to biographies of Judy Chicago and Lee Krasner and a major study of Theresa Bernstein. During 2015-16, Levin held a Distinguished Fulbright Chair in India and was a Fulbright Specialist in Mongolia in 2019. She also shows her own artwork and publishes fiction.

Bridging art and protest, Konkel describes the opioid controversy behind the Sackler family and how Nan Goldin, a photographer, brought attention to the issue of the Sackler family's museum patronage.

What role does an art historian play in connection

What role does an art historian play in connection with an artist's legacy? Scholars, curators, biographers, teachers - art historians like Gail Levin -- dedicate their lives to unearth and preserve the biographical and artistic record disappearing in the haze of time. Whether an artist is a careful record keeper or not, what are the steps artists could have taken to have had their work seen and receive the appreciation that they deserve in their lifetime? Where would they be without art historians retracing and unearthing their steps and marks?

Join us in conversation with Gail Levin, Distinguished Professor at the City University of New York, who wears the hats of a biographer, an educator, a curator, a scholar and an advisor to artists and those are just to name a few! Dr. Levin will discuss the various steps and processes that art historians take to help artists not become forgotten, preserve their work, have their work known to the public and protect their legacy. Dr. Levin is the author of the Edward Hopper catalogue raisonne and the biographer of Lee Krasner, (Krasner's catalogue was created by yet another scholar). Having worked with Judy Chicago and many many others, Dr. Levin will discuss how these and other artists tend to keep their records, plan for their legacy, and how her extensive work, including establishing the Catalogue Raisonné Scholars Association, publishing countless articles and meticulous work on the Hopper’s catalogue raisonnes contributed and impacted artists' legacy, and her own.

The workshop is designed for art historians and artists in mind, to illuminate the decision-making processes for art historians in choosing artists to study and guiding others on where to begin and what to do to assist artists looking to showcase and preserve their work in perpetuity.
