Litigating. Reporting. Judging. Join us for the highly anticipated Art Law Conference 2024, held at Brooklyn Law School and Online (Hybrid). Entitled “Art Law: The Story,” this year’s conference explore the captivating narratives behind the different narratives of art law cases and decisions.
Our event will feature a series of dynamic panels, each offering invaluable insights into the multifaceted world of art law. Gain firsthand knowledge from our distinguished lineup of speakers, comprising esteemed judges, seasoned journalists, and experienced art litigators. Together, we’ll dissect the intricacies of defending artists’ rights, delve into the nuances of reporting on art law cases in the media and the court of public opinion, and analyze pivotal judicial rulings that have shaped the landscape of art law.
In addition to enriching discourse, our event will also feature exhibitors and a silent auction aimed at raising funds to support artists’ rights initiatives and bolster the Center’s efforts to provide accessible and affordable legal resources to the artistic community.

The conference will feature a keynote presentation on copyright, creativity, and ethics. We are pleased to offer attorneys 3.0 professional practice transitional and nontransitional credits.
Join us on May 29th for a networking reception and silent auction results, following an insightful and inspiring portion of the day.
Program
Art Law Conference 2024 aims to tell the art law story from different vantage points. Our mission is to bring together students, attorneys, artists, arts and legal professionals to discuss contemporary and relevant topics at the intersection of art and law. The conference will provide a novel way of of learning about advocacy for artists rights, innovation in intellectual property case law and expectations, court of public opinion created by members of the media and hear from the esteemed judges who have ruled in seminal art law cases.
Speakers will include attorneys and journalists from leading law firms and media outlets in the United States and internationally as well as members of the Judiciary branch. The panels will include a presentation and discussion from the speakers and conclude with a question and answer session with the audience to ensure interactive engagement.
Materials for the conference will include speaker slides and handouts with additional reading materials and resources. The subject matter will be directed for a general audience of students, arts professionals, and legal professionals. No experience or prior knowledge is necessary for the conference.
Attendance will be available both in-person and online to best serve our community members and patrons. Legal professionals and attorneys to receive Continued Legal Education credits and all attendees will enjoy networking and growth opportunities.

Marcus Asner served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York (2000-2009), where he was the Chief of the Major Crimes and Computer Hacking/Intellectual Property (now known as Complex Frauds) unit for two years, and served in the Public Corruption unit. He is now co-chair of the Arnold & Porter’s White Collar Defense & Investigations practice.

John Belcaster serves as General Counsel of MSCHF, an American art collective based in Brooklyn. Before joining MSCHF, John built legal, risk, and compliance functions as General Counsel for two fintech start-ups, PayForward and NextCapital (acquired by Goldman Sachs). For a decade, John worked in a small Chicago-based law firm alongside former colleague, Barack Obama. Prior to his General Counsel roles, John worked as a software developer and served as an economics instructor in Chicago, where his classroom experiences earned widespread acclaim. He has worked with entrepreneurs in Beijing, Shanghai, South Africa, the Balkans, Honduras, and the United States. John earned graduate and law degrees from Yale, where he served as Managing Editor of the Yale Law Journal, editor of the Yale Journal on Regulation, and judicial intern for Ruth Bader Ginsburg. John earned his BA (with honors) from Northwestern.

Honorable Judge Fredric Block was nominated to the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York, by President Clinton in 1994 and assumed senior status in 2005. Judge Block received his LL.B. from Cornell Law School in 1959. After which, he was a clerk for the Supreme Court of the State of New York, Appellate Division until 1961 and then entered private practice until he was appointed to the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York. Judge Block has presided over a number of high-profile cases, including the trials of former Bear Stearns hedge fund managers Ralph Cioffi and Matthew Tannin, Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff, Peter Gotti, Lemrick Nelson, and nightclub magnate Peter Gatien. He regularly sits by designation on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. In addition to Race to Judgment, he recently authored the best-selling book, Disrobed: An Inside Look at the Life and Work of a Federal Trial Judge. He also co-authored the 1985 off-Broadway musical Professionally Speaking (music and lyrics). He has published articles on a variety of legal topics.

Anden Chow is a former federal prosecutor who assists companies and individuals in complex domestic and cross-border criminal, regulatory, and asset forfeiture investigations. He advises on U.S. economic sanctions, anti-money laundering (AML) regulations, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), cryptocurrency issues, and asset tracing. He also represents clients in high-stakes civil litigation.
Over nearly a decade as an Assistant United States Attorney in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, Mr. Chow investigated, litigated, and resolved federal matters ranging from: a wide variety of fraud; international financial transactions, including sanctions evasion, FCPA violations, money laundering through both traditional and cryptocurrency platforms; to other federal criminal matters including trade secrets theft, racketeering, extortion, international narcotics trafficking, and murder. During his time as a federal prosecutor, Mr. Chow tried more than ten cases to verdict, and he briefed and argued multiple appeals before the Second Circuit.
Prior to his work for the Department of Justice, Mr. Chow was an associate with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. He served as a law clerk to the Honorable Stephen A. Higginson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the Honorable Lance M. Africk of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

Blake Gopnik is the author of Warhol, the first comprehensive biography of the Pop artist, and in the spring of 2022 began work on a biography of Albert Barnes, the great American collector of modern art. He has been the staff art critic at the Washington Post and Newsweek and is now a Contributing Critic at the New York Times. He has a PhD in art history from the University of Oxford.

Honorable Barbara Jaffe is newly retired from the New York State Supreme Court, New York County. She is now Of Counsel to Borah, Goldstein, Altschuler, Nahins & Goidel, PC, where she focuses exclusively on cases brought in the New York State Supreme and federal courts. She obtained her JD from Brooklyn Law School. After serving successively as principal court attorney to two Supreme Court justices, Judge Jaffe was elected to the New York City Civil Court and subsequently appointed to the New York State Supreme Court, Civil Term.
Presently, Judge Jaffe serves as a Director of the Center for Art Law, on the Advisory Board of the Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert (JALBCA), and on the Supreme Court Committee of New York County Lawyers Association (NYCLA). Judge Jaffe was the New York City Bar Association’s (City Bar) Delegate to the State Bar and served on its Committee on Nominations, Committee on Art Law, Committee on Civil Court, Committee on Public Service and Education, and its Special Committee on Capital Punishment. At NYCLA, Judge Jaffe presided as co-chair of its Civil Court Practice Section and is a Founding Faculty Member of its Art Litigation and Dispute Resolution Institute. She also moderated annual panels on various art law topics for NYCLA’s Art Litigation and Dispute Resolution Institute.

Chief Judge Loretta A. Preska was nominated to the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York in 1992 by President George H. W. Bush, and in 2009, she became Chief Judge. Chief Judge Preska graduated from Fordham Law School in 1973 and received her L.L.M. from New York University School of Law. Chief Judge Preska is a member of the Federal Bar Association, the Federal Bar Council, the New York County Lawyers Association, and the New York State Bar Association. She served as a member of the Committee on Federal-State Jurisdiction of the Judicial Conference of the United States, as chair of the Benchbook Advisory Committee, the Board of Directors of the Federal Judicial Center, and has served on the Advisory Board of the New York Chapter of the Federalist Society. Chief Judge Preska’s private practice career began at Cahill Gordon, where she was the only woman summer associate in her class. She primarily practiced commercial litigation in the federal courts until her appointment.

Scott Wilson

Scott R. Wilson is a Partner in the New York office of the global law firm DLA Piper. His practice focuses on commercial litigation and defending government investigations. He has represented collectors, museums and other clients in disputes involving stolen art and antiquities trafficking. Earlier in his career, Scott served as Senior Advisor and Special Counsel to the New York Attorney General. He is a former member of the Art Law Committee of the New York City Bar Association.
In addition to his government-facing practice, Scott represents clients in complex business disputes in federal and state courts and domestic and international arbitration. He has significant experience representing global financial institutions in matters involving credit derivatives and structured financial products.
Scott previously served as Senior Advisor and Special Counsel to the New York Attorney General (NYAG). As a member of the NYAG’s executive staff, Scott helped oversee a wide range of civil and criminal investigations, negotiated high-profile settlements and served as a liaison to other state and federal agencies in connection with the Residential Mortgage-Backed Securities (RMBS) Working Group co-chaired by the NYAG. In the courtroom, Scott served as trial counsel and argued appeals in enforcement proceedings brought under New York’s anti-fraud, consumer protection and not-for-profit corporate governance laws.
