New York City’s Salary Transparency Law In Effect (2022)

On November 1, 2022, New York City’s salary transparency law went into effect. The amendment to New York City Human Rights Law requires businesses with four or more employees to list “good faith” salary ranges on job postings, extending to positions performed in New York City (including those for companies based outside the city) but not applicable to city-based employers offering remote positions. Companies who do not comply will be in violation of “unlawful discriminatory practice” and may be fined up to $250,000 per violation.
The law follows years of campaigning by advocates and organizations like the National Emerging Museum Professionals Network (NEMPN), Museums & Race, and Museums Are Not Neutral, who demanded that the American Alliance Museums to require salary transparency. Advocates note that transparency should lessen gender and racial wage gaps and disparities in overall salaries between major and smaller museums, and increase workers bargaining power.
