Richard Serra’s legacy and the posthumous management of his artworks

The recent passing of artist Richard Serra has highlighted the increasingly complex issue of posthumous management of an artist’s work. The last exhibition conceived by Serra himself, Six Drawings, at David Zwirner’s London gallery, shows how the artist’s instructions play a key role in the posthumous management of his legacy. Experts emphasize that artists should address the management of their works during their lifetime, documenting their wishes as thoroughly as possible. The role of estates, moreover, is evolving: there is a noticeable trend of estates, increasingly supported by professionals, towards broader management of the artist’s legacy, despite the sensitive nature of these responsibilities.
