Art & Copyright Law Clinic

Join us for an informative presentation and pro bono consultations to better understand the current art and copyright law landscape.

Copyright law is a body of federal law that grants authors exclusive rights over their original works — from paintings and photographs to sculptures, as well as other fixed and tangible creative forms. Once protection attaches, copyright owners have exclusive economic rights that allow them to control how their work is reproduced, modified and distributed, among other uses.

Albeit theoretically simple, in practice copyright law is complex and nuanced: what works acquire such protection? How can creatives better protect their assets or, if they wish, exploit them for their monetary benefit?

The Art & Copyright Law Clinic is designed to help artists navigate these complexities by connecting them with legal professionals who can clarify their rights, explain relevant protections, and keep them informed of emerging issues in copyright law, especially as new technologies like generative artificial intelligence reshape the legal landscape.

After a short lecture on a copyright law topic, attendees with consultation tickets will be paired with one of the Center’s volunteer attorneys for a confidential 20-minute consultation. Limited slots are available for the consultation sessions.

The Clinic is scheduled for October 28, 2026, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM ET.

Schedule:

• 5:30 – 6:00 PM EST: Introductory Remarks
• 6:00 – 8:00 PM EST: Individual Consultations

The entirety of the Clinic will be hosted virtually on Zoom. The one-on-one consultations take place in breakout rooms to ensure confidentiality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who may register?

• All are welcome to attend and listen to the Introductory Remarks.
• The one-on-one consultations are suitable to those artists who have copyright concerns (under US law), have no attorney and are seeking a first-time legal consultation.

  How do I register?

• Pre-registration is mandatory and takes place through Eventbrite.
• You may purchase an Introductory Remarks ticket for $10 (plus taxes and fees).
• You may purchase a Consultation (Introductory Remarks included) ticket for $20 (plus taxes and fees). Eventbrite will prompt you to fill out a confidential intake form which will enable us to find you the assistance that you need.
• You will receive a confirmation email from Eventbrite after you register. Eventbrite automatically sends the Zoom information 2 hours before the Clinic’s start time.

  How do I prepare for the Clinic consultation sessions?

• ´When filling out the intake form, please mention any specific questions or areas you need a consultation in. The information you provide in the Clinic order form will allow us to pair you with a Volunteer Attorney who can best answer your questions and provide the most relevant insight, so please provide as many details as you can.
• You can prepare a list of questions and concerns you have about art and copyright law to discuss during the consultation. They do not have to be related to the topic addressed in the Introductory Remarks.

What happens after the Clinic?

• The Center for Art Law will provide a handbook with additional resources on copyright law as well as the contact information of the Volunteer Attorneys participating in the Clinic.
• If you wish to pursue the conversation with your Volunteer Attorney you should reach out to them directly! The Center is not responsible for facilitating conversations between the participants and the volunteers after the session.
