Welcome to our workshop on the practical aspects of registering works of visual arts with the US Copyright Office with Carol J. Steinberg, Esq.
In this Workshop, Carol explained why Copyright Registration is a prerequisite for enforcing your legal rights and why she calls it “Artists Liability Insurance.” She explained what it is, how to get it, and specifically what benefits it yields and what losses failure to register can bring. She providesdguidance as to how to navigate the U.S. Copyright Office process with some guidelines for group registrations and specific rules for registering works created with AI. The goal of this workshop was to educate artists on the importance of registering their artworks, provide resources for them, and empower them to pursue registration without the need to hire an attorney.
About the Speaker:
Carol J. Steinberg, Esq.
Carol J. Steinberg has practiced art, copyright, and entertainment law in New York City and on the East End of Long Island for over twenty years. She is a Member of the Faculty of the School of Visual Arts, where she teaches courses on Artists’ Rights. Ms. Steinberg is a co-chair of the Fine Arts Committee and of the Pro Bono Steering Committee of the State Bar’s Entertainment, Arts, and Sports Law Section and a member of the City Bar’s Art Law Committee, where she chairs the sub-committee on Intellectual Property and of the Copyright and Literary Rights Committee . She is also a consultant to the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) and a member of the East Hampton Arts Council, the Fine Arts Federation, and ALAI (international artists’ rights organization founded by Victor Hugo). She often organizes panels and speaks to creators about their legal rights. Her most recent talk was called “COVER YOUR ASSets: Why Copyright Registration Matters, How to Use the Small Claims Copyright Forum, and AI Update for Creatives.”
