Summer Art Law Mixer: Good Fences Make Good Neighbors
July 19, 2016
About this event
Negotiating sound terms of engagement between artists and galleries is probably the one sure path to the emergence of the next Richard Prince and the next Larry Gagosian. Lack of contracts or poorly drafted contracts quickly spell disaster in a relationship between a well-meaning gallery and a talented artist who just cannot not foresee the land mines that the realities of the art market may put up in their path.
This summer, once again, Center for Art Law is pleased to join forces with Volunteer Layers for the Arts and bring you a program designed to explore good business practices for artists. This time we focus on the agreements between artists and galleries. What should artists have in mind when signing up with a new gallery? What obligations or concessions may galleries expect when adding an new artist to the fold? How do attorneys negotiate on behalf of their clients? What provisions does the New York Arts and Cultural Affairs Law has to protect consignment of art by artists?
About the Speakers
This not-to-be-missed event will bring together three speakers:
Amelia Brankov, Counsel at Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz (for the artists)
Katherine Wilson-Milne, Associate at Schindler Cohen & Hochman LLP (for the galleries)
Dean R. Nicyper, Partner and Co-Chair of US Litigation at Withers Worldwide (for the plaintiffs) to discuss good contracts that make for good artist-gallery synergies.
