The Center for Art Law presented a workshop on Provenance Research in Spring 2022 led by Owner & Consultant of Proper Provenance, LLC, Aubrey Catrone. We discussed how to read and interpret provenance for works of art and sculptures, and discussed the questions we all have been dying to know about. What’s the difference between an appraisal report and provenance? What’s the nuance behind due diligence work for appraisers? And most importantly, what do you need to know to create provenance from the ground up. With the use of case studies and professional expertise, we learnt alongside you to provide some answers!
About our Speaker
Aubrey Catrone
Aubrey Catrone is an international art historian, appraiser, and provenance researcher. Aubrey earned an MA in History of Art from University College London, specializing in versos and the documented histories of art objects.
With an art gallery and academic research background, Catrone founded Proper Provenance, LLC to provide her clients with the tools, not only to historically contextualize art, but also to shed light on attribution and legal title within the international art market. Catrone has researched artworks including paintings, artifact, works on paper, prints, and sculptures spanning the fourth century B.C. to the twenty-first century A.D. Her volunteerism has included myriad projects with the Association for Research into Crimes Against Art (ARCA), the Cultural Plunder by the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg: Jeu de Paume Database, and the International Foundation for Art Research (IFAR).
