Fire and Ice

Art Law Blast
July 2026
Dear Readers,
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
~ Robert Frost, Fire and Ice (1920)
July 2026, another month of, well, fill in the blank.
Summer is for cherries, weddings, garden parties, catching up on reading and catching up with friends. And yet the worst of humanity keeps getting in the way of enjoying what the season brings. The heat so many of us feel right now, in the air, in the headlines, is at times unbearable and frankly unnecessary. Some of it comes from nature; too much of it is man-made.
It is so much harder to build, protect or preserve than to destroy. This month, we invite you to read the latest articles from the Center, including stories inspired by the 250th anniversary of the United States of America, meet our Summer Team, and stay tuned for upcoming events, including a colloquium with Konstantin Akinsha on Ukrainian art and cultural heritage under assault. Thank you, as always, for caring for and protecting art and cultural heritage.

Onwards with art law,
Irina Tarsis and the Center for Art Law Team

DATE: Week of November 30, 2026
Location: UC Berkeley & Bay Area institutions
The legal and financial questions shaping the art world’s next decade are being decided right now — in San Francisco courtrooms, on tribal lands, and inside technology companies redefining what it means to create and own art. The Berkeley Art, Law, and Finance Intensive Seminar is a four-day program that puts you at the center of it: seminar sessions with leading scholars and practitioners, site visits to the Bay Area institutions and companies where these questions are live, and a cross-professional cohort of attorneys, museum leaders, collectors, advisors, and artists learning in the same room. MediateArt: Mediation & Negotiation Training Program (CLE)

DATE: Thu, July 23, 2026

VLA’s MediateArt Training Program is a two-day intensive workshop of basic mediation training for attorneys, artists, arts administrators, and other professionals with an interest or background in the arts.

Participants will learn effective mediation skills, particularly as they relate to art-related issues, through observing mock-mediations, engaging in mediation simulations, and receiving feedback from program faculty. The workshop will focus on “deal mediation” negotiation, facilitative leadership skills, and resolution of disputes without resorting to litigation.

Following completion of the program, participants will be eligible to take part as mediators in VLA’s MediateArt Program, as matters arise.
