Property Outlaws
October 29, 2010
On October 28, 2010, the Eyebeam Art + Technology Center in Chelsea hosted a panel discussion on “Disobedience and Innovation: Inspiring Change.” The event itself was inspired by the book, “Property Outlaws: How Squatters, Pirates, and Protesters Improve the Law of Ownership,” released in February of this year. The book was written by Professor Eduardo Penalver of Cornell Law School and Professor Sonia Katyal of Fordham Law School. http://www.amazon.com/Property-Outlaws-Squatters-Protesters-Ownership/dp/0300122950
Professor Katyal was one of five panelists at the discussion. The other panelists were Fred Benenson, of Kickstarter, Stephen Duncombe, of the Gallatin School at NYU, Jonathan Seiler, of PublicAdCampaign, and Brooke Singer, a media artist. Eyebeam, a center for Art and Technology, was a perfect setting for the event. The discussion dealt with disobedient acts that have led to innovation in the law and in society. For example, panelist Seiler organized a team to paint over illegally posted advertisements. Although he was arrested for his act, he brought attention to an important issue regarding the uses of our public space. http://gothamist.com/2009/04/30/jordan_seiler_public_ad_campaign.php
