Property Outlaws

On October 28, 2010, the Eyebeam Art + Technology Center in Chelsea hosted a panel discussion on “Disobedience and Innovation: Inspiring Change.” The event itself was inspired by the book, “Property Outlaws: How Squatters, Pirates, and Protesters Improve the Law of Ownership,” released in February of this year. Professor Katyal was one of five panelists at the discussion. The other panelists were Fred Benenson, of Kickstarter, Stephen Duncombe, of the Gallatin School at NYU, Jonathan Seiler, of PublicAdCampaign, and Brooke Singer, a media artist. Eyebeam, a center for Art and Technology, was a perfect setting for the event. The discussion dealt with disobedient acts that have led to innovation in the law and in society. For example, panelist Seiler organized a team to paint over illegally posted advertisements.
