The United States vs Alfredo Martinez
The United States vs Alfredo Martinez documents the life and work the New York City-based artist notorious for forging the works of artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. He was arrested for wire fraud after selling forged Basquiats and sentenced to time in prison in 2002. During his time in prison, Martinez continued making art using unconventional materials like coffee and fruit juice and his work was even featured in gallery shows. He saw his imprisonment as a “publicity stunt” and an opportunity to make a statement about the art world’s valuation of authenticity and money. He even gave a forgery master class as part of The Downtown Biennial where attendees learned how to create a fake Basquiat. Martinez later collaborated with and mentored Anna Delvey (Anna Sorokin), a con artist who had also been imprisoned for defrauding the art world. Martinez curated a show of Delvey’s work, and even created some of the pieces himself when she faced prison restrictions. Alfredo Martinez passed away in 2023 at the age of 56. His life and unconventional approach to art cemented his place in New York’s underground art scene and earned him a spot in collections like the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Rothschild Collection.

O’Keefe’s Commentary on the 1970 UNESCO Convention
This new edition of Patrick O’Keefe’s classic book presents up-to-date analysis of the 1970 UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property, contributing to a detailed article-by-article commentary on the Convention’s provisions, while providing historical context to the Convention’s adoption and a contemporary understanding of its stature today.
The traffic in cultural artefacts has been a major challenge for the international community, especially when it involves cross-border smuggling and the potentially conflicting application of different national laws. The UNESCO Convention was adopted in 1970 to confront this challenge, setting out important mechanisms for the protection and the return of cultural objects. While the direct legal effect of the Convention is debatable, it has without doubt become the quintessential marker in the fight against the illicit antiquities trade, coming to influence standards across the entire cultural sector. With almost 150 States Parties, the Convention has had an indelible impact on the ethical landscape affecting acquisitions and due diligence amongst museums and the art market.
The book highlights the background which led to the creation of the Convention and offers a critical look at how it has been interpreted over the years by commentators and international bodies. It also examines in detail specific implementation of the Convention across a number of important States.
The 1970 Convention is a watershed, an aspiration, an icon – and an eternal compromise. This book shows how the Convention has come to be all these things at once, and what its future may hold.

IP before IP: Exercising and Protecting Creations and Inventions before the Modern IP Regime
This illuminating book examines how people managed their creative and inventive works before the modern intellectual property (IP) system. Neil J. Wilkof explores how individuals treated intellectual creations in their respective times and across differing political, cultural, and religious backgrounds.
Written as an engaging narrative, and presenting a wide range of historical and geographical accounts, the book traces IP from the Biblical era to the Industrial Revolution and from Edinburgh to Baghdad. Each chapter explores a self-contained historical period, highlighting the diversity of people, locations, periods, and circumstances prior to the modern harmonisation of legal IP. The narrative illuminates the motivations for protecting creation and invention, underscoring notable attitudinal differences between then and now. Rather than seeking to uncover historical antecedents to the modern IP system, the book addresses intellectual historical creations and inventions on their own terms and within their own milieu.
IP before IP is an essential resource for scholars and students of intellectual property law, and legal, cultural and literary history. Intellectual property lawyers seeking to broaden their understanding of historical IP will also benefit from its diverse, expansive scope.

Censorship in Polish Art After 1989: Art, Law, Politics
Censorship in Polish Art After 1989 is a pioneering work on censorship in Polish art after the fall of the USSR available in English for the first time with a skilled translation by Łukasz Mojsak and Aleksandra Sobczak. Polish Art Historian Jakub Dąbrowski, with contributions from Anna Demenko, offers the first comprehensive study to analyze the problems of restricting the freedom of artistic expression in the Third Polish Republic. Censorship in Polish Art After 1989 includes two complementary approaches – legal and historical (including political and social aspects of the phenomenon).
